DECEMBER 2008:
Scaffolding will be erected around the dome during this week, the start of the first major restoration project undertaken with funds raised through the capital campaign. Once the scaffolding is in place, our architects will help us determine the extent of the needed restoration. We know that the decorative tiles on the outside of the dome are loose, but we are unclear if there additional damage to the exterior. (An interior probe made last summer told us that the dome is structurally sound.) Once the inspection is complete and we know what we must do, the approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission will be sought. Work will commence just as soon as their approval is in hand. The scaffolding could remain in place for one year, which should be sufficient time for the work to be completed.

Members of the Building Committee are happy to answer questions (send to central@stbarts.org and we will forward): Percy Preston, Jr., Chairman;
Carole Bailey, Kent Barwick, Greg Harper, Peter Kendall, Katherine McHale, Jeff Walker. Ex Officio: the Rector; Wardens Kate Briggs, James Marion; Facilities Director Dennis Durney, Director of Operations Beth Ralston and our Project Manager, Fred Conze.

FALL 2008 UPDATE on the Campaign for Preserving and Renovating our Landmark Building:

• A new, highly efficient air conditioning system has replaced our failing, expensive equipment—and extended a/c to the café space in the Community House for the first time.

• Five internal drains have been re-lined and work has begun on 14 more, stopping the unsightly and damaging leaking you see inside the church. When all is dry and secure, we’ll be able to clean and restore the stone.

• Scaffolding will soon be erected on the dome to enable further testing of condition and begin the repair and restoration of the mosaic tiles.

• Design work for the new church seating is complete, and sales of chairs (and some of the smaller pews) will begin early in the new year.

SAVE THE LANDMARK. SERVE THE CITY.

Help the landmark that has helped New Yorkers for nearly a century.
After many years of renewal, introspection and discernment, St. Bartholomew's Church is making a dramatic recommitment to its mission by reinvesting in its sacred space and New York City.

I'd like to make a contribution to the Capital Campaign.
