12:30 pm: Book Study: Christian Mysticism by W. R. Inge
William Ralph Inge's work on the Christian tradition of mysticism--cultivating a direct relationship with God--emphasizes both how this "raw material" of religion is available to all, inside and outside of the church, and throughout all cultures. These lectures, delivered in 1899, begin the Twentieth Century revival of serious study of mysticism within the Christian tradition continued by Evelyn Underhill, Thomas Merton and which continues to the present day. Where Inge is unique for his time, and in tune with ours, is in his openness to the experiences of mystics from different cultures and traditions while remaining firmly at the core of the Christian and Anglican tradition. Interested more in what joins individuals on the quest for God than in what divides them, Inge remains relevant for our day. Led by parishioner John Wirenius.

We will spend seven weeks reading and reacting to Inge's lectures:
I. General Characteristics of Mysticism
II. The Mystical Element in the Bible
III. Christian Platonism and Speculative Mysticism--(1) In the East
IV. Christian Platonism and Speculative Mysticism--(2) In the West
V. Practical and Devotional Mysticism
VI. Practical and Devotional Mysticism (continued)
VII. Nature-Mysticism and Symbolism.
