ADVENT-CHRISTMAS THEMES FOR DECEMBER? - See Seasonal Events.
Pageant Update!
Good News from Children, Youth & Family Ministries: St. Bart's will be filled with the youthful pageantry of the Holy Family, innkeepers, shepherds, townspeople, animals, "electrifying" dancers, and wonderful narrators at the Christmas Eve service at 4 PM for children and families. Not to mention the children's sermon on the chancel steps, interactive song, gifts for the children, Youth group readers, and, of course, our fabulous choristers leading us in song. When we say child-friendly, we mean written for children and under an hour -- come and ring in Christmas with your children, friends, and visiting family. See our complete Advent and Christmas Services here.
[Pageant rehearsals (for children ages 4-11) will be held on Dec 6, 13, and 20, 12:30-2pm. The dress rehearsal is on Dec 24 at 2pm.]
ADVENT WREATH-MAKING
Sunday, Nov 22 from 10-10:50 parents are invited to assemble an Advent wreath with their families. There are enough supplies for #40 families. $10 donation per wreath. Please enjoy this wonderful family preparation for celebrating Advent in your home. Weekly Advent Table Prayers provided.
HOLIDAY TREE ORNAMENT-MAKING
Sunday, Dec 13 from 10-10:50, parents are invited to create a host of Christmas ornaments with their children (of any age) to decorate the "Children's Tree" located in the cloister hallway. This is an especially good event for inviting friends. The St. Bart's Children's Tree delights children and visitors alike with its unique and colorful ornaments during the Christmas season. (Pine tree compliments of our local Boy Scout troop.)
Early Communion Class will be held on Sunday, October 25 at 10:00-10:45 (in place of Chapel/Sunday School) at the high altar in the church. We call it "Early Communion" instead of "First Communion" because children are invited to the Communion table when they are old enough to ask for it. Many of our children have had the experience of being welcomed to the table and this is an opportunity to explore this holy mystery together. During our class session, children and their families will gather for an experiential session with the Rev. Lynn Sanders about the Eucharistic feast -- what it means, why it matters, and how it connects us to God's children all over the world.
Family Chapel-Sunday School, resumes on Sunday, September 27 with a joyous Family Chapel Service (in the Chapel) followed by get-to-know-you Sunday School sessions 10am-10:50. Children of all ages are welcome in the Chapel; classrooms are age-appropriate, divided into Pre-K. K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. Register on the first day.
Sunday, September 13:Youth @ The Center resumes in the Vestry Room at 10am. For details about location, program and registration, contact Julie Ross. More at http://www.stbarts.org/youth.asp

Summer 2009: Art Classes & Film Clip Series
For fifteen Sundays, beginning June 14, children ages 4–11, accompanied by a parent, will work with both creative artistic talent and skilled facilitators in a fun, thought-provoking exploration of children’s Hollywood film clips— Charlotte’s Web, Shrek, Akeelah and the Bee, Seabiscuit and the like—to continue our education in character and spiritual formation.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 20: JAMIE KORB
This Sunday, Jamie Korb will lead this Sunday's Artist in Residence series with a demo and participation lesson on Stained Glass art.
At left are two images of two of her art pieces. We are so pleased to have Jamie share her talents in this field with us.

More recent Sunday explorations, include exploring transformation in creativity through our physical bodies and painting the many hands of the world.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21
RIGHTS OF CHILDREN & CARPENTER'S KIDS. Kathy Bozzuti-Jones did a brief teaching about the rights of all children to clean water, food, shelter, safety, and education, to set the context for an art project related to our beloved young friends, The Carpenter's Kids, in Tanzania. St. Bart's has a relationship with a mission organization that teaches carpentry to poor children; this summer, we will assist by providing their required school uniforms. The art project consisted of decorating 90 colorful canvas bags, upon which families made creative drawings and wrote inspirational, loving messages. The bags will hold the gifts that Judy will present to the children when she arrives in the small Tanzanian village this summer.
SUNDAY, JUNE 14
PRAYER FLAGS: Elizabeth Lewin kicked off the 2009 Artists-in-Residence program with a World Prayer Flag project, which included design and decoration of symbols from various religious traditions and the word "peace" transcribed in several languages, focusing, especially, on languages in areas of the world that are in conflict. The result was a long and colorful length of beauty and humanity -- modernized with a neon green-colored clothesline and big wooden clothespins securing the flags.
HOW IT WORKS: for fifteen Sundays, beginning June 14, children ages 4–11, accompanied by a parent, will work with both creative artistic talent and skilled facilitators in a fun, thought-provoking exploration of children’s Hollywood film clips—
Charlotte’s Web,
Shrek,
Akeelah and the Bee,
Seabiscuit and the like—to continue our education in character and spiritual formation. Sundays 10:00–10:50 in rm 42 (use the Community House elevators). Guests are always welcome. No registration required.
BETWEEN SERVICES
This workshop series is conveniently positioned between the 9AM and the 11AM services, so you can attend one or the other, whatever is best for you and your family.

(Left to right) Luca, Mark, Grace, Nicki, and Donna pose atop their colorful structure -- after a sermon-time lesson in St. Bart's Chapel, during which children and teachers shared their thoughts about building lives and communities on a firm foundation, with Love as the cornerstone. They agreed that welcome, kindness, caring, sharing, mercy, voice (as in advocating for others), paying attention, gratitude, patience, helping, hope, fairness, justice, peace, sensitivity, creativity, fun and rest would be in keeping with God's plan!

Farewell, Anne Karoly
St. Bart's Children, Anne Karoly, former coordinator of "Godly Play" for Children, Youth and Family Ministries, was called to a position at Virginia Seminary, where she has "hit the ground running," defining her roles as strategist and organizer -- part of a new team developing an institute for Christian formation and leadership, there. Since 2002, Anne has served St. Bart's as as chalice bearer, lay reader, Parish Council member, education table leader, artist-in-residence presenter, and co-teacher for Baptismal and Confirmation preparation. Anne brought to her ministry here laughter, a kind heart, and humility about her many accomplishments in church settings, both local and national. She successfully piloted Godly Play at St. Barts and helped to train our first group of classroom storytellers and helpers. We know that the children will miss "Miss Anne" very much, as will our teachers and me. The photo of bread that Anne baked for each of the children, as a remembrance of how they shared sacred time on Sunday mornings, is an indication of the love and care that Anne brings to her work.

"Godly Play" (Not Your Father's Sunday School)
St. Bart's Children, Youth & Family Ministries is winding down the pilot year of it's Godly Play classroom (K-1). Godly Play is a complex curriculum that involves storytellers memorizing scripted stories, using various story objects, teaching the art of silence and ritual, and encouraging children to wonder aloud about the meaning of our Christian stories. Because it is not didactic and the lessons are 'caught' rather than taught, children have a unique opportunity to develop their own spiritual and religious language. The curriculum is designed to help children express their own experiences of God, in a Montessori-style interactive classroom.
Pictured here, Bob Potter tells the story of the "Good Samaritan" and the children respond to questions such as, "I wonder who is the neighbor in this story?" and "I wonder where you are in this story?" Afterwards, they share a feast of homemade bread and juice. Bob is one of 7 specially-trained Godly Play instructors at St. Bart's.
Formerly coordinated by Anne Karoly, the 2008-9 Godly Play coordinator
will be Elizabeth Lewin, who plans to spend the summer enhancing our collection of our story objects, preparing the weekly story rota, and assisting me with training. Our hope for the year 2009-10 is to add a second classroom.
