Where Does St. Bart's Money Come From?
And Where Does It Go?
Many people have heard us say at one time or another, "At St. Bart's we raise 98 cents of every dollar we spend."
Here's how that dollar breaks down: 59 cents comes from annual pledges and other gifts, 24 cents from programs (e.g., our CRI courses and Great Music concert series), and 15 cents from our "enterprises"—the café and the bookstore, for example—and space rentals. The last 2 cents of our sample dollar comes from endowment income that is restricted to support our Community Ministries programs (our homeless shelter, breakfast program and food pantry).
How we spend that dollar: 65 cents pays the salaries and benefits of the people who work at St. Bart's—those who lead our worship and carry out our ministries of teaching, preaching and service, and those who support them in their work for this community. Costs of our programs (free concerts, free CRI lectures, and "scholarships" for parish retreats and other activities) account for another 12 cents. We allocate 5 cents for communications; 8 cents for building expenses, and 10 cents for outreach ministries.
The annual budget of St. Bartholomew's Church requires about 8.5 million of those "sample" dollars. Our doors are open all day, every day of the year. In any given year, we hold more than 18,000 events in our historic church and Community House complex.
To keep our programs and ministries running smoothly, and to continue to grow in numbers and in spiritual maturity, we need the help and participation of members and friends from across the street and around the world.
