In Solemn Remembrance of September 11, 2001

September 20, 2024

Last week, St. Bart's held the 23rd annual Holy Eucharist In Solemn Remembrance of September 11, 2001, honoring the lives of the brave firefighters from the nearby firehouse on 51st Street (Engine 8, Ladder 2, Battalion 8) who perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center. These men, who rushed downtown to save lives, are remembered each year as their photos grace the chancel, a poignant reminder of their selfless courage. In his sermon, No Greater Love Than This, the Right Reverend Dean Wolfe reminded us, "We can never forget these heroes. Never. Just as we can never forget the heroes still living who suffer the dire consequences of breathing microscopic toxins in the service of others on that fateful day. Still, they climbed." In partnership with the Grand Central Partnership, the service has grown to include firefighters from across the East Side, many of whom were children during the attacks. Today, they stand in solemn tribute to their fallen predecessors, ensuring that this legacy of bravery and sacrifice endures for generations to come.
