Exploring Dimensions of Spirituality and Dementia
The Reverend Lynn Casteel Harper, the Minister of Older Adults at The Riverside Church and author of On Vanishing: Mortality, Dementia, and What It Means to Disappear, will explore spiritual aspects of dementia, expanding understandings of dementia beyond progressive vacancy and dread to make room for hope, creativity, friendship, and spiritual growth.
The Reverend Lynn Casteel Harper is an essayist, minister, and chaplain. Her debut book, On Vanishing: Mortality, Dementia, and What It Means to Disappear (Catapult, 2020), was named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and a Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle selection for 2021. She currently serves as the Minister of Older Adults at The Riverside Church in the City of New York. Lynn completed her M.Div. at Wake Forest University and her chaplaincy residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Before joining Riverside’s staff, Lynn was a nursing home chaplain at a continuing care retirement community. Originally from southeastern Missouri, Lynn resides in New York City with her husband Ryan Harper.
