A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History
We think we know the story of the Civil Rights Movement: the United States was segregated; Martin Luther King, Jr. fixed it through love and nonviolence; he unfortunately died; and the rest of us all lived happily ever after. But that is not what actually happened. The real Civil Rights Movement used far more radical methods and had far more radical aims than we often realize, and it’s a movement that is still not over yet. Jeanne Theoharis, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College, discusses her book A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History and how the dream that Martin Luther King, Jr. outlined has still not been fulfilled.
