Camino De Santiago

Days 2 and 3 of Walking the Camino de Santiago

by Margaret Ponders on October 17, 2024

The St. Bart’s pilgrims hiked almost 35 miles in two days through amazing terrain and weather. On day 2, we covered 13 miles of rainy, road side flats, followed by 5 miles up steep, rocky paths better suited for yaks. We arrived in O Cebreiro, a tiny town in Galicia (tiny as in 100 inhabitants in high season!), to great relief. Everyone who attempted the nearly 18-mile hike completed it; no taxis were taken!

On day 3, we hiked 13 miles, including both "down" and "up" hill sections, which were much "easier" than yesterday’s knee-buckler uphill finish. Thanks to our able guide, Fran, the rain we encountered caught few of us by surprise. When asked, "will there be rain today?" Fran responded, "of course."

On the evening of day 3, our group found itself warmly ensconced in a hiker’s hostel in Triacastela with laundry! Lacking any private space within the hostel complex, we held Night Prayer held under the stairs of one of the hostel buildings. We both hike and improvise well!
