Day 5 of our journey had us walking from Saria to Portomarin - 13.5 miles total. The weather wasn’t very cooperative as there was a steady mist the entire way-the kind that soaks through everything including fabric that is supposed to be waterproof. The scenery was amazing and there are more pilgrims now on the road. In order to get a certificate in Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrim must walk at least 100KM so many begin their journey in Saria. So many nationalities represented and everyone gives a greeting and a “Buen Camino!” as we walk along. I passed the 100KM marker today.
I walked most of the way alone today and it gave me time for quiet contemplation of this journey. I admit that when I first learned about the Camino trip I thought “great, a walk through Spain, it will be awesome” but it has become so much more. It has truly become a pilgrimage for me. I think about my parents who both passed away within the last 3 years. I carry a piece of each of them with me on the road, a necklace that I remember mom always wearing when I was young and my dad’s white handkerchief. I think about my family whose pictures I carry as well and pray for them with each step I take that they will be happy and healthy. I also pray for my friend and two cousins who are ill with cancer. I walk for them and say prayers for their healing. Such a wonderful experience this is and I am so grateful to be with the St. Bartholomew pilgrims on the way.
