Defining the Relationship

by Zack Nyein on February 14, 2025

Dear Friends,

In my role shepherding newcomers I am often asked about membership. As we approach Lent — a season of renewal and recommitment — I would like to take the opportunity to lay out our approach. Perhaps you’ve been “dating" St. Bart’s for a while. Here is some information for those interested in "defining the relationship" this Valentine’s Day, or just curious about what membership means.

Belonging Together at St. Bart’s and in the Wider Church

Membership is a somewhat nebulous category at St. Bart's, as we strive to embody the radical welcome of Christ. In this place, you belong. Already and always. If you consider St. Bart’s a home, we consider you part of the community. We welcome to general membership and participation people from all backgrounds, including interfaith and atheist friends who have family connections or simply feel drawn to the beauty of this place.

Nevertheless, there are opportunities to formalize your membership sacramentally. The first step is baptism, open to all children in the church, as well as adults who have committed to following Christ and never been baptized before. To inquire about baptism contact Teagan Sage at

For those interested in a comprehensive exploration of the Christian faith as an adult, our next Pathfinders course begins March 9. This eight week series offers an overview of church history, scripture, worship, and theology, together with an opportunity to build relationships and connect with others in a non-coercive and affirming environment. At the conclusion, all participants are invited (never pressured) to consider being Confirmed or Reaffirmed by the Bishop of New York as official members of The Episcopal Church and the Worldwide Anglican Communion. Membership Expectations and Benefits

At baptism, we become full members of the Body of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit with gifts for ministry. Every baptized member is a minister, and baptized members are at minimum expected to worship and receive communion regularly.

Baptized adults are also expected to contribute financially. The Canons of The Episcopal Church describe “Communicants in Good Standing,” as those who have “received Holy Communion at least three times in the previous year (as able), have been faithful in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God, and are financial contributors to the Parish of record.”  Communicants in good standing are eligible to vote in the annual meeting and participate in all levels of lay leadership in the parish.

There are no set membership fees. You may give according to your conscience and discernment, and we encourage you to prayerfully consider making an annual pledge. Click here to learn more.

Church membership might be compared to membership in a gym or social club. What you get out of it correlates with what you put in. St. Bart’s is a safe and supportive place to “dip a toe in the water,” and many choose to remain anonymous for some time. As you choose to engage more deeply, you signal to the clergy and community that you don’t just want to attend, but also be known, as we are all known and seen by God. We as the clergy vow to do all in our power to care for you with love and support befitting of the children of God.

Peace,
