It is a joy to be able to offer a unique musical education to children at St. Bart’s. Seeing my choristers’ progress from never having sung a note to masterful music-making is fulfilling beyond words and knowing the lifelong impact of their time with St. Bartholomew’s Choristers makes me want to share our offering with as many children as possible.
Last summer, St. Bart’s offered a brand new camp: Find Your Voice Camp. This camp had a couple goals: 1) to introduce children to singing, and 2) to introduce children to the chorister experience at St. Bart’s. In planning the camp, I didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be a lot of fun for the kids, the staff, and myself. Amazingly, a few of the campers joined our ranks as choristers!
I’m extremely excited to be leading Find Your Voice Camp again this year! It’ll be a joy to work with new kids as they discover what it’s like to sing for the first time. This free camp includes so many activities, even beyond singing, that you could only experience at St. Bart’s:
- Singing games where kids learn to use their voices in a large space
- A scavenger hunt where kids discover the art and architecture of the church, from the stained glass to the paintings of former rectors!
- Art classes that are inspired by the look and feel of the building
- Musical instrument demonstrations where kids hear and see the flute, violin, timpani, organ, and more demonstrated masterfully by members of the St. Bart’s community
- Playground time in our unique rooftop play space
- A service of Choral Evensong in the chancel to show off what we learned over the week and share with our parents
Every activity speaks to a child in a particular way which makes running the camp incredibly fun and worthwhile. My hope is that, through giving just a glimpse of what it’s like to sing at St. Bart’s, we can light the spark that will ignite a lifelong passion for music.
