Pivot one more time and take that shot

by Raquel Murray on July 16, 2021

In high school I was a starting forward on the junior varsity basketball team. In practice and scrimmages we learned ball handling, rebounding, and basic plays like the pick and roll and the pivot. While the elusive fast break was the play celebrated with shouts and high fives, the pivot always struck me as every player’s secret weapon; one that can help you avoid a defensive play, find an opening, pass the ball, or take a shot. My pre-WNBA dreams were dashed after a knee injury during a basketball game. Surgery to fix the torn ligament was an option but my father was straightforward about my prognosis and more importantly my skill. After a tough heart-to-heart about my prospects, we opted for physical therapy and a future filled with ice packs and knee braces. My days on the court may be long behind me, but the lessons I learned have stayed with me over the years.

The past 18 months have shown us all how quickly plans can be derailed. Within weeks we changed how we worked, communicated with loved ones and shopped for essentials. Our challenges included learning the features of Zoom and Google Meet; balancing work, school and family schedules; and for many, finding solitude and Wi-Fi bandwidth in New York City apartments were often equal challenges. But through it all, just like any decent power forward to step onto the court, we all learned how to pivot. And to extend the basketball metaphor a little further, these past months have also taught us that we function best when we work as a team.

Successfully managing the operations of a complex organization while adhering to the ever-changing guidelines of government authorities happens when a group of talented and dedicated people work towards a common goal. I am extremely proud of our St. Bart’s staff and what we have accomplished. My own collaboration and communication skills were put to the test; but, as I was challenged, I was also strengthened, and this experience has taught me that I have the capacity to grow as a manager, friend, colleague, daughter and a Christian.

We are in a new time. Let’s not call it a “new normal” because we have the chance to build on what we’ve learned and create something better. We’ve learned how to do more with less, and we’ve been reminded of the true value of those around us. And mostly we’ve learned just how connected to each other we truly are—each and every one of us. As we step out into the sunshine after the dark days we’ve endured, don’t be afraid to push past your boundaries and move out of your comfort zone. Pivot one more time and take that shot!
