Several Sundays throughout the year are designated A Choral Feast and celebrate a specific theme, composer, or a major choral work. This morning’s service features music from George Frederic Handel’s Chandos Anthem No. 9 “O Praise the Lord with one consent,” HWV 254. Composed in 1717-18, it is one of eleven such works written when Handel served as composer-in-residence for the future First Duke of Chandos.
They combine verses of the Psalms as they appear in the New Version of the Psalms of David (1696), a lively translation by Nahum Tate (1652-1715) and Nicholas Brady (1659-1726). (Tate also penned the carol “While Shepherds watched their flocks by night,” as well as the libretto to Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.) The work is scored for choir, soloists, and orchestra of strings, oboes, and organ, performed with an ensemble of period instruments.
Additionally, the St. Bartholomew’s Choristers will sing an aria from Theodora, an oratorio first performed at Covent Garden in 1750, and telling the story of the fourth-century Christian martyr of that name. The Sanctus and Benedictus are an adaptation by Alexander Pattavina from an aria from Athaliah, and oratorio based on the Jean Racine play Athalie.
