Jesus Before Christianity by Albert Nolan is a classic work of liberation theology first published in 1976. Rather than focusing on the later doctrines of the church, Nolan examines the historical Jesus as he was experienced by those who first encountered him in first-century Palestine. The book emphasizes Jesus’ radical compassion, his challenge to social and religious structures, and his vision of God’s reign as a liberating reality for the poor and marginalized. Nolan’s approach is accessible, thought-provoking, and oriented toward how Jesus’ life and message can inspire action in today’s world.
About the Author
Albert Nolan (1934–2022) was a South African Dominican priest and theologian. He was deeply involved in the struggle against apartheid and became internationally recognized for bringing the insights of liberation theology into that context. Nolan’s work sought to make theology practical and engaged, focusing on how faith responds to real human suffering and injustice. He also served as the regional superior of the Dominican Order in Southern Africa and wrote other influential works such as Jesus Today.
