A Pastoral Announcement from the Clergy

July 16, 2022

Jane Tully

May 4, 1946 – July 14, 2022

With great sadness and deep hope in the resurrection, we write to share that, after a long illness, Jane Tully died on Thursday, July 14 in Santa Barbara, CA. The wife of the Reverend Bill Tully, the 11th Rector of St. Bart’s, Jane was an integral part of this parish’s life from 1994 to 2012.

Jane was particularly instrumental in ensuring that the Radical Welcome of St. Bart’s fully embraced gay and lesbian people. She advocated for the gay and lesbian community beyond the parish as well, cofounding the organization Clergy Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (CFLAG). In 2005, she was the only layperson invited to address the Anglican Consultative Council in Nottingham, England as the Anglican Communion struggled to respond to the consecration of the Right Reverend Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire. On the Sunday following her address, Bill told the parish about his wife’s brave witness. “These days she is teaching me more about Jesus,” he said, “than I am teaching her.”

Jane is survived by Bill, her two sons (Jonah and Adam), her brother (Jim), her sister (Lucia), and Adam’s wife Sol. A graveside burial service will take place in Santa Barbara on Wednesday, July 20.

If you wish to write a condolence note to Jane's family, please do so here. We will collect your notes and send them to the family on your behalf.

May Jane and all of God’s Beloved rest in peace and rise in glory.
